How to Choose Your SIH Problem Statement
SIH typically releases 200+ problem statements across all themes. Picking the right one is half the battle. Here’s a proven framework.
The Selection Framework
1. Match Your Team’s Skills
If your team is strong in ML/AI, pick problems that specifically need AI. If you’re web developers, pick problems that need portals or dashboards. Don’t pick hardware problems if nobody knows Arduino.
2. Check Competition Level
Problem statements from popular ministries (MeitY, Health) attract 500+ teams. Less popular ones (Chemicals, Textiles) may have only 50 teams. Lower competition = higher chance of winning.
3. Assess Feasibility in 36 Hours
Can you build a working demo in 36 hours? If the problem needs 6 months of data collection, skip it. Pick problems where you can show a functional prototype.
4. Look for AI Angle
In 2026, judges heavily favor AI-powered solutions. If you can add an LLM, computer vision, or predictive model to your solution, you’ll score higher.
5. Check Data Availability
Some problems need specific government datasets. Check if the data is publicly available. If not, you’ll waste hackathon time finding data instead of building.
Red Flags to Avoid
- Problems that are too vague (“improve citizen experience”)
- Problems that already have well-known solutions
- Hardware problems if your team has no hardware experience
- Problems needing government API access you don’t have
